John Smith is a partner in the London office and the Global Head of the Industrial Goods & Services practice. Over his 25 years at Bain, John has directed a wide variety of assignments with special emphasis on multinational companies, global strategy and organization, corporate transformation and Private Equity.
John has extensive experience advising multinational clients on major change programs including turnarounds, new functional structures, and decision roles and processes. He has an in-depth knowledge of various industrial sectors.
Starting in the Boston office, he has held a wide range of responsibilities outside the US since 1990 including leading Bain’s Eastern European practice, and serving as Director of a Bain & Company/Soviet joint venture (Bain Link) in Moscow. He then ran multinational client engagements in Germany and Switzerland out of the Munich office prior to moving to London in 1997.
He has held various positions in Bain & Company governance committees such as Chairman, Worldwide Promotion and Compensation Committee, and Chairman of the Nominating Committee.
He has been a Member of a Committee of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council in Washington, D.C. Prior to Joining Bain & Company, John was a Project Manager at British Leyland, UK, and a Project Manager at CERN, Geneva.
John earned an MBA with Honors from Columbia Business School and received and Honors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Hertfordshire University in England.
