VETERAN BANKING EXPERTS PHILIPPE DE BACKER AND ED LIN APPOINTED AS GLOBAL CO-LEADERS OF BAIN & COMPANY'S FINANCIAL SERVICES PRACTICE

 

New York-February 1, 2011-Bain & Company, the global business consulting firm, has appointed Philippe De Backer and Edmund Lin as co-heads of its Global Financial Services Practice; this was announced today by Steve Ellis, Bain's worldwide managing director.

Mr. De Backer is a senior partner in Bain's Paris and Dubai offices, where he splits his time, and leads the French, Belgian and Middle East Financial Services Practices. He formerly led Bain's Financial Services Practice in Europe. Mr. De Backer joined the firm in 1992 in Boston, and moved to Belgium to open Bain's Brussels office, before relocating to the Paris office.

His experience includes all facets of strategy, ranging from corporate, business unit, growth and operations improvement to organizational structure. In addition to his extensive experience in financial services, including capital markets, he has led numerous large-scale post-merger integration projects across Europe.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. De Backer was the CEO of ADB, an electronics company, part of the Siemens Group. He is a graduate of Colgate University where he received a B.A. in economics with high honors, magna cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He also earned an M.B.A. from the Tuck School at Dartmouth.

Mr. De Backer has co-authored four books on management which includes the best-selling business book Maximum Leadership, Go East, Management Audit and most recently Reinvent Retail Banking. He is a frequent keynote speaker at global business conferences and has written a number of articles for publications, including Benelux Results, L'Echo, La Libre Enterprise and American Banker. He is often sought out for his expert commentary and has been quoted in leading media including in The Wall Street Journal Europe, the Financial Times and Reuters.

Mr. Lin is a senior partner and founding member of Bain's Singapore office, and currently heads the firm's Financial Services Practice in Asia-Pacific. He has worked in the firm's San Francisco, Boston and Seoul offices and will continue to be based in Singapore.

He brings broad and extensive experience in the Asian banking and insurance sectors, with a particular emphasis in Southeast Asia and Greater China, advising local and multinational management teams on growth, customer segmentation, portfolio, and market entry strategies. Mr. Lin has considerable experience leading private equity funds and corporate acquirers on issues ranging from deal generation and screening to acquisition due diligence and turnaround strategies and in-depth knowledge of the changing post-crisis regulatory environment and how it is impacting financial services institutions in the region.

He earned an M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, graduating with honors and received a Bachelor of Science degree in business from the University of California at Berkeley, graduating as a Regents and National Merit Scholar.

Mr. Lin serves on the Advisory Board of Singapore Management University and is a guest lecturer at INSEAD. He has authored articles that have appeared in Dow Jones, BusinessWeek and Retail Banker International. He has also been a featured broadcast guest on CNBC Asia.
