Bain & Company

MBA graduates and most other candidates with advanced degrees who have rigorous, relevant business and analytical experience join Bain as consultants.

Consultants take responsibility for attacking the most advanced and difficult problems our clients face, including understanding specific competitor performance, assessing underlying market dynamics or dissecting the drivers of—and potential for—financial returns.

Day to day
Consultants create the necessary consensus within a client's organization to achieve results. As a consultant, you'll learn and develop as a business leader by:

  • Developing the strategy behind a client's new market-entry, product launch, or reorganization
  • Presenting that strategy to the client's executive leadership
  • Advocating for the right set of actions to implement that strategy
  • Working closely with the team to continuously improve the thinking, analysis and direction of the strategy
Bain supports you
Bain is committed to broadening your business knowledge beyond your MBA or advanced degree training. Consultants work directly with partners, managers and other firm leadership every day in an open, collaborative relationship that maximizes learning and fosters lifelong mentoring relationships. Additionally, Bain sponsors formal training programs starting with a global one-week offsite with other new consultants from around the world.

The skills consultants learn at Bain are both unique and transferable. They learn not only to answer the toughest questions, but also to act decisively to get things done and generate lasting impact. Consultants build a personal, influential network among clients and colleagues that will serve them wherever their careers take them.

The consultants who choose to stay at Bain begin to manage teams at approximately the two-year point. The typical timeframe for promotion to manager is two and a half to three and a half years. After that, the road to partner takes approximately three to five years, depending on performance.

If consultants decide to leave Bain, our flexible environment helps best position them to succeed in their chosen careers. Our alumni take general management positions across many industries. Bain consultants find a quicker path to senior roles because of their Bain experience. Other alums take on the challenge of running their own business. Private equity and other financial careers are also popular routes for Bain consultants.
