Bain hires people with a wide variety of prior industry and/or consulting experiences. Having obtained a solid undergraduate degree, experienced professionals do not necessarily want to pursue an MBA, but they want to redirect their career and have an interest in strategy consulting.
Experienced professionals join Bain at various levels, depending on their skills and experience. Most join Bain as associate consultants or consultants. Some will be hired into starting roles, while a few others may enter the firm in second- or third- year roles. Experienced hires have the same training, promotion and work opportunities that are available to all of our professional staff.

Young professionals
Candidates with up to three years successful work experience typically should apply for the associate consultant position. We are not looking for any specific industry background, as Bain hires and trains generalists for this role. But we are looking for outstanding analytical and interpersonal skills. Your professional achievements and the quality of your academic background will typically demonstrate these.
Industry professionals
More experienced professionals-with roughly three to six years of successful business experience as industry professionals-should apply for the consultant role. As an experienced professional from industry, you will not be asked to further specialize in your current field of expertise. While we value your background and experience, we want to broaden your skills and industry experience. A specific introduction program, formal training in business concepts and technical matters, and tight coaching will help build your career rapidly. As with all our consulting staff, performance and progress is formally evaluated every six months, leading to tailor made development advice.
Senior level professionals
A few senior professionals may be invited by the firm to join at the manager and partner levels. To be considered for the most senior levels in the firm, you will be expected to have prior relevant experience in consulting and/or in a consulting-like role in a corporate environment (e.g., internal consulting, strategic planning).
