Bain & Company

Being a Bain consultant is a difficult job, one which often requires putting in extra effort. Developing an implementable strategy alongside the client doesn't just happen. In a matter of weeks, consultants are expected to become highly knowledgeable about their client, the client's industry and the competition. On any given day, consultants need to be poised to add value to both internal and external meetings. Regardless of the type of client, consultants can count on an accelerated learning experience, client interaction and a high degree of responsibility—all of which can be very taxing at times.

That said, Bain cares about work-life balance. We try to foster an environment where our consultants can balance the demands of creating client impact with the opportunity to pursue personal aspirations, nurture their families, contribute to their communities and travel the world. Bain teams are flexible. They make a concerted effort to work around teammates' other activities, whether it's attending a child's school performance, a Thursday evening class or a lunchtime workout.

Bain provides options for each individual's unique needs. Some Bain people work part-time or choose a corporate, non-client role to achieve greater balance. Others take advantage of sabbaticals or leaves of absence to completely focus on other pursuits for a period of time. Still others decide to complete a rotation at one of our clients or affiliated companies to broaden their learning experience. International transfers provide opportunities for consultants to experience business from a different geographic perspective. These opportunities—whether short- or long-term—provide our consultants with flexibility without jeopardizing their careers.
