Why Bain?
Before starting at Bain everyone impressed on me the emphasis
placed on personal development and training at the firm. Since
beginning my career at Bain my expectations have been
comprehensively exceeded. Training and development are always
prioritized and colleagues maintain a keen interest in your
progress at all times. Whether it be organized training events or
informal feedback sessions with your manager, Bain facilitates
personal and career progress and shares in your success.
My passion at Bain and outside of the
office?
Bain places a strong emphasis on pursuing extracurricular
activities outside of the office. Sport has always been a keen
interest of mine and Bain has supported this passion through Bain
Active, which organizes and subsidizes sporting events within the
office. At the start of the year I took over the running of Bain
Active in the Sydney office which has been a great way for me to
continue to enjoy physical activity and share with the office my
love of sport.
My favorite (recent) case
The first case I was staffed on focused on increasing customer
loyalty and optimizing branch formats in a retail bank. My main
role involved focusing on branches which were not performing to
their full potential and identifying improvements to the branch
network which would result in better branch performance.
With this being my first case, I was initially a little overawed
by the task at hand, however I was amazed at how quickly, with the
help of team members, I was able to learn about the industry. The
team also had a lot of fun working together as well as at regular
case team events outside the office. With strong client
collaboration we were able to deliver tangible and substantial
results for the bank.
My personal results story
As a Bainee you achieve things you may have initially thought to be
impossible. I am forever extended just beyond my comfort zone such
that I find my work challenging and am forced to improve. At the
same time, however, there is an amazing support network that is
always available to provide guidance. A Bainee never lets another
Bainee fail and I know that if there is a problem I am having
trouble overcoming, I have a strong network of friends and
colleagues who I can go to for advice in a completely risk-free
atmosphere. Everyone here shares in the success of others, which is
an amazing culture for any firm to have.
A final thought
Before starting at Bain I was weighing up options at different
consulting firms and investment banks. One of the things I found
most difficult about the application process was differentiating
recruitment-speak from what would be the everyday reality of
working at different firms. My solution was to have conversations
with as many people as I could at different companies.
From these conversations I formed an image of Bain as a place
with an emphasis on learning, full of intelligent people who love
to laugh and enjoy each other's company. It is vital to determine
which firm provides an environment which will be most beneficial to
your career development. On a personal level, however, I feel very
strongly that Bain has been a fantastic place for me to start my
career.
