Consultant, Sydney

Why did you choose Bain?

I judge consulting firms based on their value proposition in four key areas—compensation, career progression, personal development, and work environment. The big three strategy firms all differentiate themselves in largely equal proportions on compensation, career, and development opportunities, but when it comes to a great work environment; Bain is the clear leader in the industry. Besides having the most well-rounded people, Bain is serious about having fun at work, taking time out for social activities, and facilitating the creation of a global network amongst each peer group.

My passion at Bain and outside of the office?

Aside from my client work, I love being involved in recruiting events and running training sessions—both of these activities are related to my passion of helping others succeed professionally, by finding the right job and developing the skills for success.

Outside of work I take an active interest in outdoor sports like sailing and rock climbing, my fitness (I am a recent P90X grad and a long distance runner), and oil painting.

My favorite recent case or project

I am currently working on an exciting case to change the way that customer experience is designed and delivered at a major telecommunications client. Our work touches on all levels of the organization, from working with the C-Suite to establish listening posts with customers to drive strategic thinking, to designing solutions with the frontline to deliver better customer service. The changes required touch on multiple aspects of culture, structure, systems, and strategy. Being part of a transformational agenda of this size is a once in a career opportunity. We have access to the very senior-most executives and our view points are steering discussions with the Board and the market—it really makes you challenge your own thinking! We are working hard to deliver results for this client, but we are also building lasting relationships as a team over bi-weekly team drinks, frequent team lunches, occasional gym sessions, and our daily interactions.

My personal results story

My growth as a professional at Bain has been tremendous. I came to Bain with three years of prior consulting experience, but it took coming to Bain to accelerate my career development and learning trajectory.

My perspective on diversity at Bain

Bain offices are like melting pots—they are filled with people from all over the world and from every different background. My current case team is made up of nationals from Germany, United States, Australia, Sri Lanka, Norway, and France, and the office and case team dynamic is constantly changing. Only the truly open-minded can survive for long in that type of an environment. Diversity is a cherished way of life at Bain.

A final thought

One principle I live by is to leave things better than when I found them. At Bain, I get the chance to practice that every day with my clients and with my colleagues. It is hard to imagine something more rewarding.
