Why Consulting?
I migrated from industry to consulting primarily because I wanted a greater diversity of experience and to develop a broader range of skills.

Why Bain?
The energy level: You don't find it any other firm and that is why I chose Bain. People from Bain people are far more personable and engaging. Looking back on my time here, I have had the opportunity to work on the broad range of issues and complex problems I'd hoped for. Bain people are smart and accomplished, but always grounded. Bain culture lived up to its reputation - there are two partners in particular who have been outstanding mentors to me. Bain's flexibility also proved helpful when in 2000, I took a leave of absence for 8 months to work on a start-up in Silicon Valley with some friends.

A memorable experience at Bain
One of our industrial products clients was unable to meet its pension contributions, never mind its debt. But within four years since our involvement, the share price increased ten-fold in what would be an extremely successful transformation case. Initially, the business unit that I focussed on looked like it would never make money. That same unit is now probably the most successful unit in the portfolio. In fact, we were recognized by the CEO as having generated $400 million of value by turning around that portion of the business. I am most proud of the impact our team made.

How is Bain India office unique?
While it exhibits many of the traits of any other Bain office in terms of a close, informal and collaborative culture, India's business environment has a sense of energy that is both invigorating as well as challenging. The range and breadth of issues that the India office works on are no less challenging than anywhere else.

Other office roles.
I currently lead the recruiting program in New Delhi. When working in Boston, I used to lead the firm's recruiting drive at Wharton. I am also very passionate about mentoring and coaching as I feel these are important elements that make Bain what it is today.

Interests outside work.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family. I also spend time with causes that have a positive impact on India. I was on the Board in the US for Child Rights & You (CRY) and have been actively working with them over the years. Recently, I was involved in helping the Clinton Foundation set up a nursing institute to treat HIV/AIDS.

Advice for prospective applicants.
To those who are applying now, I strongly urge you to invest the time to understand all aspects of the firms to which you are applying. You want to get the most out of the experience so make sure you make the right decision for yourself.
