Description of role:
Gemma is a principal in our London office, leading our case teams and clients to solve some of our clients' toughest business problems. Since joining Bain in 2005, she has been mainly based in London, although from 2006-2009 she was part of the team building Bain's business in India. She has been promoted four times in the last nine years. Her responsibilities now range from inspiring and guiding a team on a day-to-day basis to cultivating the Bain relationship with senior clients, consistently bringing innovative thinking and executive insight to the table.

She specialises in Customer Experience and Organisation and has worked across industries, including Financial Services, Tech and Consumer Products. Over the past two years she has been at the forefront of helping UK banking clients figure out how to transform their Customer Experience. She has driven multiple impressive results for our clients, helping them to drive customer advocacy whilst sustainably reducing costs.

She also has significant internal responsibilities: she is the leader of our Graduate recruitment programme, leading the team that is accountable for selecting and recruiting Associate Consultants in London.

Why does this person choose to work part time?
Gemma is passionate about building deep advisory relationships with our clients to solve their most important business issues, delivering sustainable results as well as making a real difference to the individual client and to their business.

Gemma chooses to work 4 days a week and has proved that it is possible to have just as much impact, albeit in fewer hours. She is able to enjoy a sustainable work-life balance and has the time to pursue the life and passions she wants to outside of Bain.

In addition to working 80%, Gemma has twice taken periods of extended leave from Bain; a seven-month Leave of Absence in in 2009 and 2 months' leave in 2013 as part of the "Take-two" programme. On both occasions, she returned to her role refreshed and revitalised after extended periods travelling with her husband.

How the nominee came to work part time in this job:
Gemma worked full time at Bain until 2012 and has now been part time for 2.5 years. She initially tried working 80% as a 6-month "pilot", but it proved so successful for her that she made it a permanent arrangement.
