Bain London is one of the oldest Bain offices, having been established in 1979 as the firm’s first venture outside of the United States. We like to think that this entrepreneurial spirit continues to be one of the defining features of our office, reflected not only in the work we do, but also in the people we hire, whatever their level.
So, what do we do? In line with the rest of Bain, we work with ambitious management teams to make companies more valuable. For us in London, these include executives from across the UK and Ireland as well as further afield, who not only share our passion for results but who are willing to be bold and act decisively to achieve them.
In terms of particular expertise, as one of the larger offices, our work in London covers all Bain’s capabilities and sectors. In the UK, we work with many different clients of varying sizes, spanning a similar mix of industries to the FTSE 100.
Our office is home to several global heads of the most important Bain practices, including strategy, organisation and results delivery as well as global and European sector heads for industrial goods & services, telecoms/technology/media and private equity. The latter is one of our most successful practices—over the last 20 years, we have advised on more than 50 per cent of larger European deals.
As our greatest asset, our people drive our success. Like all Bainies, the London team is full of people who like a challenge—we set high targets for ourselves as well as for our clients. In the UK, our alumni have gone on to apply their passion for results in an extraordinary variety of ways, from being CEO of well-known companies like Tate & Lyle and Whitbread, to running blue-chip private equity funds such as Bain Capital and Cinven, to setting up their own very successful businesses like Innocent and Leon to making a difference in the not-for-profit or public sector, such as the Carbon Trust and the Department of Energy and Climate Change.
We also have a lot of fun and enjoy learning from one another. We are passionate about making Bain a great place to work, and in 2006 were recognised as No. 1 by the Financial Times Best Places to Work survey, the first of several Bain offices to achieve this recognition. Over 50 nationalities are represented in London, not to mention an array of talents and extracurricular interests, ranging from former Olympic rowers to ballet dancers. There is never a dull moment!
