What is your background pre-Bain? And what is your
current role at Bain and how long have you been
here?
Before Bain, I was a consultant at the Monitor Company in North
America and Europe and Business Development Director at Bell
Atlantic. I gained my MBA at Kellogg, an MPhil in Economics at
Oxford and a BA at Yale.
I joined Bain three years ago as a Partner in the Bain London
office. I'm part of the Telecoms/Media/Technology (TMT) practice
and Global Innovation practice.
How would you describe your role at Bain? What have been
your most memorable case experiences? What are the results
(client-related as well as internal) of which you are most
proud?
In terms of my role, the thing I enjoy most is spending time with
clients. I particularly enjoy challenging them, and having them
challenge me - this is how we test boundaries and drive change in
the client environment. I am a part of many teams. case teams, the
TMT practice team, the innovation team. My role here is to push the
thinking, extract insights, contribute to the development of
others, and promote a high-energy and fun environment at the same
time.
I have three most memorable case experiences:
Recommending to a client that they not continue to harvest a
declining business-but rather go back on the offensive, re-invest
in the business, and turn it into a growth business
Designing and running a competitive simulation with a client that
involved role playing. The client became so immersed in the
exercise that they could not come out of their roles; the exercise
lasted several hours longer than expected, but when they finally
re-emerged, they realised that they had been badly neglecting their
most important customer in favour of a potentially dangerous one.
This led to a considerable revision of the client's business
orientation, and a new capital investment strategy
Organising Bain's one-of-a-kind 2009 winter event, which featured
a rather outlandish talent competition, Bain's Got Talent.
