Mike McKay

Mike McKay was a long-time and deeply valued member of the Bain family, as well as a dear colleague and friend to many. Following his sudden passing on July 22, 2026, we remember Mike for his many contributions to Bain and the lasting impact he had on those who worked with him.

Mike’s connection to Bain spanned nearly four decades, beginning with his time as a summer associate in 1987 and continuing as a Bain Advisory Partner through today. As a founding member of our global private equity practice, Mike helped shape it into what it is today. Beyond PE, he dedicated his career to bringing the best of Bain to every client he served and his impact on those clients and on our firm will be lasting.

Those who knew Mike know his greatest work was his deep dedication to, and investment in, the development of others. He served as a devoted mentor and trainer to countless colleagues over the course of his career. He gave generously to nonprofits and helped shape young minds as a beloved professor at Brandeis University.

Mike had a rare gift for captivating everyone around him, whether he was lecturing, coaching, or simply holding court in a meeting. Those who worked with him will remember his humor and energy, including his enthusiastic and joyful performances with the Bain band, of which he was a stalwart. He had a way of making every interaction feel personal, and it made him one of the most approachable and unforgettable people at Bain.

More than anything, Mike’s genuine kindness left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to spend time with him. Among his many wonderful traits, colleagues and friends fondly recall his honesty, thoughtfulness, and his generosity of spirit.

Mike was one of those rare people who made every room warmer and every team or project better. His loss will have a deep and lasting impact. All at Bain who had the good fortune to work with or spend time with Mike will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with Mike’s family and loved ones.
