What to Expect
Over the past 20 years, consulting has been the first career step for many of the most talented young business graduates. But while they may be familiar with top firms’ prestigious reputations, few people know what the job is actually about.
Management consulting—or, more specifically, business strategy consulting—is conducted at an organization’s highest level by those charged with making its broadest, most pivotal decisions.
It’s about crafting tailor-made strategies that are grounded in facts and common sense rather than pursuing generic visions or dreams.
What You'll Do
What You'll Do
As a management consultant, you're faced with many challenges. Here are just some of the things you'll do.
Help Make Big-Picture Decisions
You'll confront major choices, guiding your clients on the decisions to make and how to implement them.
Rapidly Gain Exposure to Industries
You'll gain experience with a vast range of industries and clients, and see how your decisions affect them.
Collaborate with Great Teams
You'll work as part of extraordinary Bain and client teams who truly want to see you succeed.
It’s unlikely that you’ll meet your client’s CEO off the bat. You also won’t create multibillion-dollar recommendations on your own.
First, you’ll need to learn the fundamentals of the job—but don't worry about formal preparation, as most firms have highly effective training programs in place.
Needless to say, strategy consulting firms offer exceptional opportunities. In return, however, those firms only hire a select number of extraordinary people.
The most successful applicants display outstanding analytic chops throughout the interview process, particularly during real-life "case interviews." Strong interpersonal skills are also crucial, as the industry involves substantial teamwork and relationship management.
