The Aspiration

Radiologists rely on accurate, timely reports to guide patient care. Traditionally, this has required human typists to transcribe their dictated findings, a process that, while reliable, takes time.

I-MED Radiology, the largest combined medical imaging network in Australia and New Zealand, wanted to explore how AI technology could complement this approach amid a continually shrinking pool of medical typists, making reporting faster and more efficient while protecting quality and trust. We partnered with the company to design, build, and deploy a generative AI-powered transcription solution—the “AI-enabled typist”—that would seamlessly slot into the existing workflow and create first drafts of reports without sacrificing quality, precision, or—critically—the trust of radiologists.

The Impact

The AI typist solution has:

• Improved typed report turnaround times by 35%
• Increased typist productivity by 2x–4x
• Allowed teams to manage reporting volumes more flexibly
• Preserved radiologists’ preferred formats and workflows

Perhaps most important, radiologists are confident using the tool. In early pilots, many found the AI output strong enough to stand alone, but keeping a typist in the loop maintained quality and accuracy, enabling efficiency gains that improve through continuous system updates and optimizations.

By combining innovation with trusted clinical processes, the AI-enabled typist allows radiologists and typists alike to focus more of their time and expertise where it matters most: supporting patient care.
