Ricky Suarez-Martinez

Hi, I'm Ricky. Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, but I am a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. I wanted a transition from engineering into business. I studied mechanical engineering in school, and I thought that management consulting would be a great opportunity for me to not only learn about many different businesses and different industries, but to prepare myself for any kind of future career that I might want to pursue.

It allowed me to see that, even as an engineer, I would be able to thrive here. Bain has all the right support structures, the right trainings and the right help from the people that you're working with to allow you to thrive, even when you're not from a business background.

One of the things that makes Bain different from its competitors is that we have leadership in private equity. I've had the opportunity to work in the private equity rotation since I joined, and I have done about 10 diligences now. It's just incredible how, after this first year at Bain, I'm able to say that I'm a mini expert in anything from food services to insurance or plastic manufacturing! Over the course of six to eight months, you really learn a lot of skills that are going to set you up for success.

A fun fact about me is that my first toy ever was a soccer ball. I don't want to strengthen stereotypes here, but I did grow up in Mexico, and when I was 10 I moved to São Paulo, Brazil, where I went to middle school and high school. Even before my dad knew if I was a boy or girl, he bought a soccer ball for me. So I kind of grew up with soccer. And I think it's very exciting that we have the Bain World Cup, which is an annual soccer tournament hosted by one Bain office for all the other Bain offices. Each office has its own team and we compete in this big event.

If you're looking for a job where you can keep on learning every day and where you'll be able to experience different industries and different kinds of business problems, I think consulting would be a good fit. If I had to give one piece of advice for someone looking to join Bain, it would be to reach out to alumni from your school who are currently at Bain, or reach out to the nearest Bain office, and talk to them about why they're passionate about working here and why that path was right for them.
