        Meet Michelle

        Meet Michelle

I was previously a lawyer for four years' before moving into consulting. I decided not to do an MBA and instead joined Bain as a lateral (experienced) hire.

        michelle.PNG

I was drawn to consulting for two main reasons -

        Professionally:

I was in a front-end transactional team in law and found that the legal lens I was involved in was only a sliver of the broader business problem the company was transacting in. During this time, I worked alongside a consulting firm and it was then that I realised the value of working day-in day-out at the client site, in terms of being completely entrenched in their business and being able to work in the guts of challenging and complex problems.

        Personally:

I'm huge people person and consulting day to day, is all about brainstorming with your team, leveraging different perspectives and that is one of the most energising parts of the job for me.

The transition from law to management consulting has been really fulfilling so far and I've had no-regrets. While you naturally have to learn a lot about a new way of doing things and thinking as well as un-learn some things about your old ways of doing; I've found I've been able to leverage a lot of my previous experience in law (especially from the client relationship perspective) and combine it with what I'm learning at Bain to date.

        Life at Bain

        Life at Bain

What makes us number one on Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work? A little bit of everything, really.

        • A unique, flexible model
        • A diverse, dynamic culture
        • An opportunity for impact
        • A global perspective
        • A focus on you

We believe our home office model achieves the best results for our people, culture and clients.

Whether you're based in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, our home office model creates personal champions and expansive opportunities across Australia.

You’ll work with colleagues on multiple cases, allowing you to develop close relationships with peers and case leaders you can turn to throughout your career. You’ll also have a home office program manager; a personal advocate who works to make sure your experience at Bain aligns with your personal and professional goals.

You’ll have an opportunity to speak your mind every week in our case team surveys – are we being guided by true north? Are we making an impact for our clients? Your feedback will help shape the direction of the case to help you and everyone else on the team align with the outcomes.

Your opportunities extend far beyond your home office, though. You’ll team with colleagues from around the world on cases that expose you to diverse skillsets and thinking, an important aspect of your career growth and development. Every 18-24 months, you’ll attend a global training session where you’ll learn from our worldwide managers and partners, and share perspectives with colleagues from 58 offices worldwide.

With a strong support system, global experience and opportunities to work with diverse teams, you’ll develop broad expertise that helps you prepare for what’s next, wherever that takes you.

We never let one another fail.

It’s a simple motto, but one we live by every day. You’ll be surrounded by people who challenge, support and inspire you—personally and professionally.

Our commitment to diversity, inclusion and collaboration is key to building extraordinary teams. We hire people with exceptional talents, abilities and potential, then create an environment where you can bring your whole self to work.

We are proudly an Australian Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (WGEA) and have worked closely with Chief Executive Women for gender parity. Our Australian diversity & inclusion groups include:

        • Womxn at Bain (WAB)
        • BGLAD (LGBTIQ)
        • Bain Indigenous Program

If you can challenge yourself to be exceptional, and champion that spirit in others, you’ll fit right in.

Industry leaders and disruptors come to us to solve industry-defining challenges.

In Australia, we work with top ASX 100 companies who want to define the future, not hide from it.

We solve transformative challenges by working alongside our clients as one team with a shared ambition—help them outperform their competition and redefine their industries. But you won’t do it alone. You’ll work on integrated teams and collaborate with a network of digital innovators to deliver better, faster and more enduring results.

In addition to impact for our clients, we partner with leading social innovators on lasting transformative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. In Australia, our key priorities to focus on are education, economic development, the environment and diversity & Indigenous Australia.

We provide pro bono support to a range of non-profits, across topics including strategy, impact evaluation and organisational design. Australian organisations we have partnered with include The Nature Conservancy, the Australian Business and Community Network, The Smith Family and Chief Executive Women.

More information on our social impact can be found here.

Your experiences early in your career will help you navigate evolving challenges and prepare you for the extraordinary opportunities ahead.

Consultants from around the world come to Dubai for Experienced Consultant Training.

We offer comprehensive, individualised training to ensure you have the tools you need to succeed at Bain and beyond.  You will attend a global training session every 18-24 months, where you'll be trained with your peers from around the globe by current Bain managers and partners, who know the skills you need to succeed. These sessions are held in various global locations, from Hong Kong to Los Angeles to Rome and beyond.

At a global session you won't sit in lecture halls—you'll learn in small groups with an enjoyable mix of presentations, exercises, role-playing and experience sharing. Participants work in teams comprised of peers from around the world, and are led by trainers from multiple global Bain offices. Our trainers aren't outsourced from other companies. In fact, we're recognised as the best in the industry at formal and informal training.

The peers you join the training sessions with, will be your Bainies for life as you build and create your own networks through these global opportunities.

Regular ongoing training is important too, which is why we invest in comprehensive ongoing in-office training, digital learning tools, as well as on-the-job learning.

The founders of Birchbox, Pencils of Promise, Warby Parker, Riot Games and Milli Millu talk about their Bain experiences.

Your priorities can shift as your life changes. At every point, we want to make sure you have what you need for a long, productive and fulfilling career with us.

A few of the programs we offer to give you added flexibility and options:

Global transfers: short term transfer opportunities to work in other offices around the world.

Learning opportunities: continue your thirst for knowledge through a MBA scholarship, externships (four to six-month externships at an organization of your choice related to your professional goals), or work with us to create your own learning opportunity! The world is your oyster at Bain.

Parental leave: generous parental leave policy for primary and secondary carers with support provided to you prior, during and after your leave period. Take this next transition in your life with full support from our Parents @ Bain group.

Flexible Pathways: take advantage of our various leave options when life pulls you in different directions. Returning parents will have options for part-time and job-sharing for times when family or personal needs take priority.

Having a good balance is important, so whilst we focus on what matters the most to you through each stage of your career, we also want to ensure you have the best time with Bain Australia and can fully bring your true self to work every day. We do this through our numerous connectivity groups that represent everything that we are passionate about: wellbeing, fitness and activity, social committee, environmental sustainability and social impact.

        We're guided by True North

True North is our unswerving commitment to always do the right thing by our clients, our people and our communities.

        FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

        Everything you need to know

        • When is the best time to apply for a role at Bain & Company Australia?

We accept applications all year round and review candidates on a rolling basis.

For those candidates who have graduated or yet to graduate, from an undergraduate or Masters’ degree with no prior professional experience, please apply during our AC campaign that takes place between February-March every year.

        • I have completed an MBA, when is the best time for me to apply?

If you have completed and/or graduated from your MBA and are no longer studying, you are welcome to apply at any time and your application will be considered via our working professional recruitment process. We accept applications from working professionals all year round and review candidates on a rolling basis.

        • How do start dates work at Bain for experienced hires?

Whilst we recruit all year round, we have set start dates for our Associate Consultant and Consultant roles. We can interview at any point prior or after these dates, but it will mean that you may not be able to start immediately after your interview process is completed.

        • Based on my years of experience/background, what role should I apply for?

Generally speaking, those who have <5 years’ of work experience, should apply for an Associate Consultant role. Whilst someone who has 5+ years’ of work experience should apply for a Consultant role.

When the Recruitment Team review your application, we will make our own assessment as to whether the role you have applied for is the most suitable and will have conversations with you directly to discuss the most appropriate role. In the event that you are invited through to interviews, we will use your interview performance as an additional data point to help us calibrate the most appropriate role for you.

        • I am currently completing an EMBA with several years of work experience, what role should I apply for and how will my years’ of experience be assessed?

We recommend that you apply at least 6 months’ prior to your completion date, however, we accepting applications all year round from working professionals with more than 5 years’ of work experience.

Generally speaking if you have more than 5 years’ of work experience, you should apply to the Consultant role.

        • Do I have to submit a cover letter and my academic transcripts as part of the application process?

Absolutely! The more you can tell us about yourself, the bigger the picture we have to review your profile.

Tip: with your cover letter, make sure you address why you’re interested in consulting & Bain. If you aren’t based in Australia, then use the cover letter to help us understand your motivation to wanting to come to Australia.

        • I’m not based in Australia, can I still apply to the Australian offices?

If you have less than 5 years’ work experience, we do require you to independently hold work rights for Australia.

If you have more than 5 years’ work experience, and meet the minimum eligibility requirements as dictated by the Department of Home Affairs (please see their website for more information), we would happily discuss the possibility of a work sponsorship.

Please note, there are currently strict travel restrictions set in place by the Department of Home Affairs for those based overseas. For more information, please visit their website here: https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/travel-restrictions-0. Updated July 2020.
