Sustainability

Letter from Manny 2021

Letter from Manny 2021

As a global society, we confront extraordinary global challenges: a pandemic, a long-overdue reckoning with racial inequity, and several unprecedented natural disasters. Each of these challenges underscores the importance of collective action and impact. The values that we hold and the actions we take have lasting impacts on our stakeholders and the world. At Bain, we have a unique opportunity to champion the change we want to see in the world, and this includes our sustainability work.

Sustainability is at the heart of our business. Our mission is to help our clients create such high levels of value that together we set new standards of excellence in our respective industries. We believe value encompasses more than economic results. It reflects a broader purpose including environmental and social impact. Our mission permeates our culture and all we do as a firm. We also have dedicated practices and initiatives to accelerate progress.

In our Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility practice, for example, that means helping our corporate clients find ways to make sustainability a source of ongoing business value and competitive advantage by integrating sustainability into their core strategies and supply chains.

We are also proud to work with some of the world’s leading Environment organizations as one of four pillars of our ten-year, $1.1B commitment to Social Impact. (Other pillars include Education, Economic Development and Racial Equity & Social Justice). Through this work, we provide pro bono consulting services to help these organizations innovate and shape the sector.

In addition, Bain’s internal Sustainability@Bain program strives every day to reduce our environmental footprint, enhance employee well-being, practice the highest levels of ethics, and procure supplies and services sustainably. In 2020, we made remarkable progress:

  • We achieved 100% Carbon Neutral certification for the ninth consecutive year.
  • We signed the Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment and set a target to be net zero by 2030.
  • We became a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact – a group of organizations committed to sustainable and socially responsible business practices.
  • We submitted our first-ever public disclosure to CDP to increase transparency to our stakeholders.

Sustainability has become an imperative for us all. Environmental challenges are growing while timelines for addressing them are contracting. For that reason, we will continue to embed sustainability into our overall firm strategy, our client communications and our procurement practices. We will continue to empower the global network of employee-led office Green Teams in their grassroots efforts to implement initiatives that lighten our environmental footprint.

We are anchored by an unwavering set of core values and principles, which we call True North: passion and commitment, honesty and openness, practical thinking, and working as one global team. True North guides us to act with integrity and always do the right thing by our clients and the communities we serve.
