Over the past decade the value chains in both the electricity and gas industries have undergone profound structural changes in most European countries. These changes include the liberalization of generation and supply, the emergence of energy trading, the spinning off of transportation, and the separation of the distribution function from supply/retail. In this paper, Bain & Company explores this latter trend.
