Steve McGrath heads Bain's Business Building and Corporate Innovation capabilities across the Asia Pacific region and is also a leader in our Energy and Natural Resources practice.

Steve's work emphasizes designing, building, and scaling sustainability-focused businesses, as well as creating innovation strategies and organizational systems to support them.

Prior to Bain, Steve established a 30-year track record of success in Silicon Valley and Asia as a venture capitalist, innovation strategist, and business builder.

As the former president of Shell Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of Royal Dutch Shell, Steve built and led investment platforms in North America and China, investing in lower-carbon technology, including renewable energy, new mobility options, and interconnected power businesses.

As a former managing director of Mach49, Steve led teams of business builders across Asia to create and scale game-changing businesses with some of the world’s most important companies. Partnered with Singapore’s Economic Development Board to design and create Singapore’s corporate venturing ecosystem.

Steve has also founded and successfully exited several technology startups in Silicon Valley.

Outside of his client work, Steve serves as an adjunct associate professor on the faculty of Nanyang Business School, NTU Singapore, and is a strategic advisor to several technology startups in Silicon Valley and Asia.

Steve earned a B.A. and an M.A. in physics and theoretical physics from Cambridge University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
