Bain & Company’s Tim van Biesen named to Consulting Magazine’s 2016 list of Top 25 Consultants

New York – May 11, 2016Dr. Tim van Biesen, head of Bain & Company's Americas Healthcare Practice has been recognized by Consulting magazine as one of its "Top 25 Consultants" for 2016 in the category of Excellence in Healthcare.  Van Biesen has reshaped the way the firm approaches its healthcare clients and, under his leadership, has grown the Americas Healthcare Practice more than three-fold over the last seven years.

"Bain was lucky to recruit Tim when he was still early in his consulting career," says Bill Neuenfeldt, Bain's regional managing director of the Americas, "The lasting impact he has on our Healthcare practice, the firm, and healthcare consulting as a whole continues to push both the consulting and healthcare industries to do and be better."

Since taking the helm of Bain's Americas Healthcare Practice in 2009, van Biesen, who is based in the firm's New York office, successfully established a three-way balance between pharmaceuticals, medical technology and healthcare delivery systems, which distinguishes Bain from its competitors.  He also built a fourth capability in collaboration with Bain's Private Equity Practice – diligence advisory services for healthcare investors.  Today, Bain covers 4-5 times more healthcare detail activity than others in the market.  Further adding to this differentiating proposition, van Biesen in 2011 launched the Bain Healthcare Private Equity Report, now in its fifth year, which reaches more than 4,000 investors and corporate executives annually.

Van Biesen changed the firm's approach to its healthcare clients in two key ways.  First, he introduced the concept of ‘category leadership' in healthcare – a focus on category depth, not breadth – which is now built in to many of Bain's healthcare projects.  Second, he expanded the firm's expertise to span pharmaceuticals, medical technology and healthcare delivery systems.

"As a firm and as a practice, we are excited about the incredible momentum we have built in the healthcare sector," said van Biesen.  "Peer recognition is always very meaningful to me – nobody knows more about what we do than our fellow consultants, so we appreciate the recognition and validation of this effort from Consulting magazine."

Van Biesen is the primary author of several seminal industry perspectives and highly regarded thought leadership pieces at Bain, including the 2015 Frontline of Healthcare report.  Nearly a year after its release, this report continues to be cited by major media and industry trade publications, including BioPharma Dive, Private Healthcare Investor and Modern Healthcare.  Based on the report's success in the U.S., Bain will publish a European version later this year.  The combination of van Biesen's practical research background coupled with his consulting expertise has made him a highly sought-after expert at prominent industry conferences and in the media.  He has spoken at the Wharton Healthcare Business Conference and the Columbia Business School Healthcare Conference, and appeared several times at the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference.  His perspectives have been quoted or published in the Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, In Vivo, Reuters, CNBC, and Dow Jones among others.

In addition to his client work, van Biesen is a leader within Bain, serving on its Global Compensation & Promotion Committee.  Outside the firm, he sits on the board of the National Stroke Association.

Prior to joining Bain in 2004, van Biesen conducted neuroscience research at Abbott Laboratories and then joined a boutique management and strategy consultancy focused largely on the pharmaceutical sector.  He began his career as a successful research scientist focused on receptor biology and signal transduction.

Over the course of about a decade, he published more than 30 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals, served as an inventor on two patents covering four human genes, and presented his research at international symposia.

Van Beisen pursued his post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University/Howard Hughes Medical Institute in the laboratory of Nobel Prize-winner Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz.  He earned his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Van Biesen and the fellow honorees will be recognized at a dinner on June 16 in New York City. Coverage of the honorees and the event appears in Consulting magazine's May issue ( Consulting is published by ALM, a global leader in specialized industry news and information.
