Agentic AI is poised to fundamentally reshape enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems by transforming a traditionally passive infrastructure into one that actively manages end-to-end workflows, delivers dynamic decision support, and elevates the user experience through conversational interfaces. Less certain is how rapidly this could happen and whether ERP supports or hinders it.
Bain’s recent benchmarking survey asked nearly 500 IT leaders about their expectations for ERP and agentic AI. Most (78%) expect at least some ERP functionality to be replaced or augmented by agentic AI over the next three years. Nearly half (44%) expect AI to affect more than 10% of ERP functionality during that time frame, and 16% expect AI to affect more than 25% of ERP functionality.
Our survey also highlighted a divide between leaders and laggards. While 35% of respondents said that ERP was enabling AI adoption, another 27% see it as a hindrance. The perception of ERP’s role in AI adoption varies according to tech maturity: Leaders find ERP helpful, while laggards see it as a drag.
