Bain & Company appoints Dirk Vater to Lead Financial Services Practice in EMEA

Munich/Zurich – Jan. 31, 2020 – Bain & Company has appointed Dirk Vater to lead its Financial Services Practice in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). He assumed his new management responsibility on Jan. 1, 2020.

Mr. Vater, a partner in Bain & Company’s Frankfurt office, has more than 25 years of international consulting experience.  He has led the firm’s Banking Practice in Germany, Austria and Switzerland since 2014 and, in that time, helped to triple practice area revenues as well as the number of partners. He brings extensive transformation experience in the domestic and foreign financial services industry to his new role with expertise in international digitalization for major financial institutions.

“For years, Bain & Company’s work with banks and insurers has been a major contributor to the firm’s above-average growth, and Dirk is one of our most accomplished experts in this area,” said Domenico Azzarello, regional managing partner for EMEA. “He has a strong track record in the financial services sector and has earned a high level of trust with both his clients and colleagues.  I am convinced that he will continue to build on Bain & Company's strong position in the industry.”

As regional practice head, Mr. Vater will work with leading financial institutions across EMEA to help them navigate an increasingly disruptive environment.  He will also be responsible for business and client development, as well the management of the practice’s consultants and professional staff.

“The challenges banks and insurers face are unique, especially in Europe,” said Mr. Vater. “Given the low interest rate environment, the still fragmented, and therefore small, national markets and the widely outdated IT, financial service providers in Europe face enormous challenges.  Cross-border consolidations as well as huge transformation programs will be the result.”

Mr. Vater is a graduate of the University of Mannheim, where he received a degree in business administration. He earned his PhD in business administration from the University of Chemnitz.
