IT and security executives recognize the looming threat to cybersecurity from quantum computing. While fully capable machines are still a few years away, their arrival will render much of today’s enterprise cryptography obsolete. Bain’s research found that 70% of leaders expect this risk to materialize within five years, yet only 9% have a defined roadmap in place—and 30% have taken no action at all.

Worryingly, executives are putting off some of the work involved in addressing these threats. Fewer than 40% of large enterprises have conducted a thorough inventory of cryptographic standards and algorithms and how they are applied to systems, workloads, and data across their environments. Nearly 75% of cybersecurity leaders are waiting for external partners and vendors to develop quantum-resistant solutions, upgrades, and mitigations.
