Finding a nontraditional career path from education to Bain
An executive vice president reflects on an unconventional career path, leaving Bain, and why he came back
Ben Wells is an executive vice president of talent and business operations in our Boston office. Before joining Bain, he spent six years teaching eighth grade English at a charter school in Boston. In this video, he reflects on the winding path that brought him to, and back to, Bain.
There’s no one path that will bring you perfectly from being a first-year consultant to whatever the next role is. You can choose what you want to do.

Executive Vice President, Talent and Business Operations
Ben Wells shares how he found his own nontraditional path to and at Bain.
Ben’s journey is a reminder that there’s no single road to a career at Bain. He came in with a passion for public education and always assumed he’d return to teaching. When he eventually did leave Bain to work in public education, the time away only reinforced what made Bain special. He returned to Bain, and today leads talent and business operations for the firm.
For Ben, what makes Bain unique is the freedom to shape your own path. Externships, office transfers, part-time arrangements, or even leaving and returning at Bain – the path looks different for everyone.
