The pressure is mounting for auto makers to invest in vehicles that are less dependent on fossil fuels. Although growth in emerging markets for combustion vehicles is offsetting the losses in the European markets from the increasing restrictions on combustion vehicles in Europe, Bain & Company car analyst Gregor Matthies points out potential issues with this growth. Beijing, for example, could "suddenly introduce travel limits on combustion cars," due to the congestion and smog they create. This change "can happen very fast" and "would be a major blow to the German manufacturers that are very successful there."
