In order for soft innovation to thrive, patent laws need to successfully create ownership of new ideas. Bain & Company partner Philippe De Backer discusses the risk-analysis investors perform with regards to the legal protection behind their investment. He points out that this is directly linked to foreign direct investment, as people "become wary of investing" when laws are loosely interpreted versus the spurring of domestic innovation resulting from strong IP laws.
