About John

How did your college experience and major help you excel at Bain?

Studying sociology at the University of Chicago was great prep for consulting thanks to the discussion-heavy courses that taught me how to think critically, speak up, and challenge ideas constructively. It also gave me the tools I use consistently at Bain like distilling research, structuring arguments, and making sense of complex systems. Writing my thesis felt like a warm-up for case work, and what I learned at UChicago shows up every day in my Answer Sessions and on case teams.

Outside of class, I joined an investment club, interned across industries, and served on student government, all of which helped me understand what kind of environment I wanted to grow in. That exploration led me to Bain.

Why did you decide to join Bain?

My decision to join Bain came down to the people, the culture, and the opportunities for continuous growth. From my first interactions, Bain stood out. People were generous with their time and genuinely invested in helping me through the process. I felt supported and the Operating Principle, “A Bainie Never Lets Another Bainie Fail,” didn’t just sound like a slogan.

I also found balance at Bain. I have protected weekends, flexibility, and a culture that makes it easy to speak up when something feels off. The learning curve was another big draw. The idea of solving different problems across industries and stretching new muscles along the way excited me. I’m growing in ways I never expected, surrounded by sharp, supportive teammates who make it all feel possible.

Do you feel like you can do impactful work at Bain? What opportunities excite you?

Definitely. I’ve seen that impact both with clients and within Bain.

On one case, I helped a quick-service restaurant shape its five-year growth strategy and even joined the demo team for new product concepts. On another, I built a dashboard for an airline CEO that is now used weekly to track business health. In those moments, the outcomes feel real. You’re not just solving a problem; you’re creating something leaders rely on.

Inside Bain, I’ve found impact through mentorship. As a school team lead for UChicago, I help recruit and support future Bainies. It’s a chance to give back and stay connected to something that energizes me.

Looking ahead, I’m excited by work that blends strategy with human behavior. It’s where my sociology background meets Bain’s toolkit, and it’s a space I’m eager to grow in.
