Press release
New York – Nov. 19 2018 –Bain & Company has tapped Tim van Biesen, a 14-year veteran of the firm, to lead its global Healthcare practice. Manny Maceda, Bain & Company’s Worldwide Managing Partner, announced his appointment today. Van Biesen, who most recently led the firm’s Healthcare practice in the Americas, will continue to be based in Bain & Company’s New York office.
Under van Biesen’s leadership, the Americas Healthcare Practice grew more than 3x over the last nine years. In that time, he carved out a highly differentiated profile for the firm’s healthcare work in two key ways, introducing the concept of ‘category leadership’ in healthcare – a focus on category depth, not breadth – and expanding the firm’s expertise to span pharmaceuticals, medical technology and healthcare delivery systems. He also led the growth of the firm’s strong positioning in diligence advisory services for healthcare investors and, in 2011, launched the Bain Healthcare Private Equity Report. Today, Bain covers four to five times more healthcare deal activity than others in the market, and the report – now in its seventh year – reaches more than 4,000 investors and industry executives annually.
Van Biesen has also led the development of other seminal industry research, including the Frontline of Healthcare report, which is often cited by major media and industry trade publications.
“Tim has built incredible momentum for the firm’s Healthcare practice in the Americas and has had a significant impact on healthcare consulting as a whole,” said Mr. Maceda. “His proven leadership will be an asset to our clients around the world as they look to deliver better care and value for patients, fuel innovation and keep costs down. I can think of no one more suited to helping healthcare businesses thrive in a dynamic and high-opportunity global environment.”
Van Biesen’s expertise spans the full range of healthcare subsectors, including manufacturers, payers, providers and services. He has helped clients develop corporate growth strategy, R&D strategy, brand sales & marketing strategy, licensing and acquisitions, post-merger integration and, manufacturing and supply chain strategy. Additionally, van Biesen is a regular contributor to the Bain & Company’s thought leadership in areas such as category leadership, complexity management, company operating model, and business transformations, areas integral as healthcare companies seek to streamline their operations and maintain their competitive edge.
In his new role, van Biesen will be responsible for business and client development, as well as the management of the practice’s consultants, professional staff and industry executive network. He will also focus on developing new products and intellectual property for the firm, while continuing to expand the global Healthcare practice’s external footprint.
“I am looking forward to leading an incredibly smart and thoughtful global team in broadening the firm’s ability to deliver real, sustainable results and deepening our commitment to support the long-term success of our healthcare clients in an increasingly complex market,” said van Biesen.
Van Biesen succeeds Ashish Singh as the head of Bain & Company’s global Healthcare practice.
He was named one of the “Top 25 Leaders in Consulting” by Consulting magazine in 2016.
Prior to joining Bain in 2004, van Biesen conducted neuroscience research at Abbott Laboratories and then joined a boutique management and strategy consultancy focused largely on the pharmaceutical sector. He began his career as a successful research scientist focused on receptor biology and signal transduction.
Van Biesen received his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University and has a Ph.D. and B.Sc. in molecular microbiology from the University of Alberta.
