A vice president of recruiting reflects on transitioning from MBA to Bain and the support he's found as an adoptive parent
Noble Stafford is a vice president of recruiting in our Chicago office. After earning his MBA at Wharton, he pivoted from the federal government to management consulting before finding his calling in recruiting. In this Q&A, he reflects on the career path that brought him back to Bain and the personal journey into parenthood that has shaped him along the way.

What was your path to Bain?
My career has been about exploring new paths and fostering connections. After starting in the federal government, I pursued an MBA at Wharton, ultimately pivoting to management consulting. Joining Bain provided the problem-solving toolkit and professional support I sought to explore business, strategy, and a variety of industries.
I also found it fulfilling to create meaningful relationships with my smart and capable colleagues. Though I realized consulting wasn't my long-term path, I found a calling in recruiting, especially ensuring access to resources for LGBTQ+ and diverse talent.
What did you do after leaving consulting?
This passion led me to an executive search firm, where I recruited executives before moving into internal change management. When Bain later invited me back to lead recruiting for the Chicago office, it felt like a natural blend of my experiences in consulting and talent acquisition.
What has your experience as a parent taught you?
My husband and I always wanted a family. We explored surrogacy and adoption, ultimately choosing adoption due to the high costs of surrogacy and a desire to provide a loving home to a child in need. Starting the adoption process during the pandemic was a time-intensive but meaningful journey. In 2021, we were matched with a birth mother, and our daughter Isa was born. Although her early months were challenging due to health complications, the experience deepened our connection and strengthened us as a family.
Parenting is filled with rewarding, challenging, and surprising moments. We were unsure about bonding with Isa initially because we lacked a biological connection but watching her grow in a supportive environment has been incredibly fulfilling and has reshaped my perspective on what it means to nurture growth.

Outside of work, my husband is a tremendous source of inspiration for me. He balances a full caseload as a therapist while taking on much of the primary caregiving for Isa. His patience and dedication to our family are qualities I deeply admire.
How has Bain supported you through the adoption process?
Currently, we're in the process of adopting a second child. This journey hasn't been easy. The adoption process is rigorous and involves a lot of patience and emotional resilience. Each time we aren't selected by a birth mother is emotionally taxing. However, my Bain team combined with Bain's 21-week parental leave policy for all parents, and financial assistance for adoption have been reassuring support throughout the process.
