PATRICK LITRE: Every year, companies spend billions of dollars on transformations, and only 12% succeed, same as five years ago. So conventional wisdom is transformations fail, but the number of real failures is down by half, to 20%. The problem is the mediocrity of the two-thirds who don't achieve the full potential but don't fully fail. And that is toxic for leadership credibility. And the compounded shortfall in margin over time makes the difference between those who fail or succeed in the marketplace.

So what do the 12% who succeed do differently? Well, they master the inside game. They anticipate the impact and disruption on the most impacted populations. They start measuring and mitigating execution risks early, and they build commitment from day one. So there is a proven path to succeed in transformation, and it's all about the inside game.
