Strategic Planning, Benchmarking, Pay-for-Performance, Outsourcing, Customer Segmentation, Reengineering, Balanced Scorecard, and Total Quality Management are among the many management tools that companies have experimented with in recent years. To what extent are these tools actually used in companies? How happy are the companies using them? Do companies using these tools do better than ones that don't? These are a few of the questions Bain & Company set out to answer seven years ago in an annual survey of management tool usage in U.S. firms as well as firms in selected countries.
