Anna Thal Larsen, a partner in retail practice at consultancy Bain & Company, says that while lower prices were a key part of discounters’ appeal, they are not the only factor. “It’s a simple experience, it’s relatively easy to shop,” she says. “What’s also driving the visit is this idea of the ‘treasure hunt’ — what deals are there this week or month?”
