Employees’ energy, in the form of passion and engagement, is a resource that managers need to pay attention to in this rapidly changing business environment. Employee engagement peaks over a series of levels, similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. A Bain & Company survey of 308 businesses in 12 industries around the world, including manufacturing, financial services, wholesale and retail, and IT, indicates that businesses in the second and third level each only account for 20%, while 60% answered that they are in the first stage.
